5 Best Pop Punk Albums Of 2013
4. Tonight Alive The Other Side Paramore's unprecedented success opened the doors for female vocalists in the modern rock scene and it's almost become the done thing to immediately write these bands off as Paramore wannabes. Tonight Alive have managed to hold their heads high above this and in 2013, they've released an album that deserves to be celebrated on its own merits. 'The Other Side' is full of emotionally charged pop punk anthems, like the rifftastic opener 'The Ocean', a song that keeps with Tonight Alive's knack of writing surprisingly forceful songs. 'The Other Side' isn't about sheer force though, as shown through the title track. While much of the album lyrically focuses on the various pitfalls of love, it really comes together on 'The Other Side' which showcases the fantastic range of vocalist Jenna McDougall's voice. It's an amazingly heart breaking song which will no doubt echo with many who listen to it. 'Lonely Girl' has become the stand out single from the album with good reason; triumphant, almost scathing vocals mix with the driving force of the instrumental side of the band to create a song that sums the album up better than words; equal parts emotion and force, Tonight Alive have created something unique here. It may be "bipolar" (according to the band, anyway) but 'The Other Side' easily cements Tonight Alive as pop punk's newest female fronted heroes.
