By the late 1980’s Prince had already cemented himself as not only one of the greatest entertainers of the generation but also an artistic enigma who’s next song would not be like the last, let alone a whole album of sameness. “I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man” is a pop-rock juggernaut, that showcases his solo chops in more ways than.

This was His Royal Badness’ first album post-Revolutions and he came to play! The crisp harmonies and masterful keyboard play were second to none, but at the 2:47 mark on the song he takes on a journey that few could match.

The sharp riff gradually crescendos to a biting high pitch attack and then smoothly transitions back into the melody before slowing the tempo and commanding the listeners rapt attention to the elongated notes hanging over the still upbeat tempo.
