50 Albums That Defined The 2000s

10. Green Day - American Idiot

When the 1990s ended, the career of one of its signature bands seemed destined to do so too. Green Day are perhaps the most unlikely comeback story of the millennium so far, a band with nowhere to go after having the master-tape of intended seventh studio album Cigarettes and Valentines stolen. They scrapped any attempts to revive the project, focusing instead on the many flaws of the post-9/11 world. Although Green Day had always adopted a light-hearted approach towards feelings of youthful alienation, in the context of the Bush-era, their traditional angst became a far darker and tormented. What emerged was an hour-long "rock opera" and concept album, telling the story of a disenfranchised teenager trying to find his way in a world of 7/11s, broken families and social injustice.
