50 Landmark 90s Albums

45. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKxV9izVdPo John Frusciante's triumphant return to the Chili Peppers was largely influential in surging them back into the upper echelons of rock music. He brings back his Hendrix-influenced funk, which combines marvellously with Flea's free-jazz bass style, helping to create some of the Peppers finest music yet. Kiedis reaches new heights as a vocalist, discovering a newfound range, pitch and melodicism. Californication finds the band testing various musical waters, ranging from their go-to funk raps, to more melodic pieces, and even alt-rock fist pumpers.

44. Rage Against The Machine - The Battle Of Los Angeles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZul_mSFczs Combining an insanely tight rhythm section, with Tom Morello's turntable/machine gun guitar wizardry, and Zach de la Rocha's politically furious rapping, Los Angeles finds Rage at its burning peak. While the messages are as strong as ever, the music has been perfected since their first two albums, with Morello bending otherworldly noises from his guitar. Seeking revolution, Rage may not have achieved their true goals, however they did create a sonic masterpiece, capable of causing a war within you.

43. Nirvana - MTV Unplugged In New York

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fregObNcHC8 A band that built its success off noise, using ear-splitting distortion and thundering drums, should not have been able to succeed on the Unplugged stage. However, unplugging managed to show Cobain's true songwriting talents, hidden beneath the noise and the fury. On display for the world are Cobain's deep, troubling lyrics as well as his wonderfully melodic music. Looking back, it played out like a musical suicide note, surrounded by the flowers of death. It is not all sorrow though, as Nirvana play some outstanding covers, including songs by such artists as David Bowie, Leadbelly and one of Cobain's favourite bands; The Meat Puppets.

42. Moby - Play

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNWhOJSzZ0M Layering beautiful gospel and blues voices over booty shaking dance grooves, Play was Moby's greatest effort. The beats bounce from techno to dance hall to hip hop, and perfectly back Moby's experimental musicianship. The vocal samples are wonderful, and the music - often led by powerful piano chords - is extraordinary. It is impossible to listen to Play without jumping out of your seat and hitting the dance floor.

41. Sublime - Sublime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTCyZvb2Uzw Released shortly after singer-guitarist Bradley Nowell's death, Sublime was their greatest effort. A collection of loose, California punk, heavily influenced by dub, ska and reggae, Sublime featured some of Nowell's best songwriting to date. The band sounds sloppy at times, but that's all a part of their charm, a fun-loving group, enjoying their music and their bandmates.
