Although many great female artists are worthy of celebrating, from Diana Ross to Debbie Harry, if you're looking for the *most* iconic then it doesn't get much bigger than the Queen of Pop.
Madonna is not only the biggest selling female artist of all time, but the 4th highest in total, behind three others who all appear on this list (counting Lennon as part of The Beatles, anyway).
From her breakthrough in the early 80s through to the present day, she's remained a constant star, while also managing to reinvent herself as musical (and fashion) styles changed. She paved the way for a whole host of female artists and groups who'd come after her, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga, and with her music and attitudes towards style and sex changed what women could say and do in the music industry.
