2. Muse - Showbiz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRQfUmL8uis Ahhh Muse. What a different beast they are to the three geeks from Devon playing weird Radio/Portis-Head prog rock in "toilets". I am one of those Muse fans, the one's that can't get over Showbiz-Revelations era, sigh. It's not for any other reason that I'm just not into the stuff on Resistance and Second Law, on the whole. Law had a few great tracks, Animals, Madness and Survival, but I still miss the take-no-prisoners-sci-fi-with-guitars Muse. I've seen Muse three times, and one of those times I was lucky enough to see Origin of Symmetry live at Leeds Festival 2011 (the same MCR gig I mentioned in the intro), at all the show's I've been to Showbiz hasn't been represented at all. I would have picked Citizen Erased as my choice, but since it was played in 2011, I've omitted it. My rules kiddo. Showbiz is a relatively sketchy album, but the title track is an anthem. It should be the national anthem. Slowly and epically the songs builds. "Controlling my feelings for too long/Forcing our darkest souls to unfold/Pushing us into self-destruction" the darkness of the lyrics fit perfectly with the deep unnerving build towards the Radiohead-esque first chorus. The song oozes darkness and fear, a twisted cry for help, cry for freedom. It's an epic slow-building rock track filled with atmosphere, all the way to the final chorus and beyond. When the song bursts, Bellamy sings empathetically, employing his trademark high-pitched warble to epic effect. Singing softly then shouting, before bellowing the highest-pitched vocal I've ever heard. Mesmerising. Muse have moved on. Considerably. They now sell out the biggest stadiums in the world, and play their own bizarre brand of pomp-Queen-pop-prog-rock. They are apparently doing a 20th anniversary tour, so fingers crossed we'll hear Showbiz in the biggest arena's in the world sooner rather than never.
