7 Heavy Metal Songs About Vicious Personal Feuds

4. Megadeth - Something That I'm Not

Since getting the axe from Metallica in 1983, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has seldom been silent regarding his contempt for his former band mates, or more specifically Lars Ulrich.

His disdain for the Metallica drummer was at an all-time high going into the year 2004 as Metallica were poised to follow up their St. Anger album with a film documenting the years of personal struggle within the band, and they wanted to use footage wherein Mustaine and Ulrich had one of their few encounters since his firing.

Mustaine was reportedly approached with said footage and asked if it would be okay for usage in the film, to which he denied. Despite this, the filmmakers proceeded to use the footage anyway, as Mustaine had previously signed a release form, allowing them to use the material as they saw fit.

Inspired by this, “Something That I’m Not” was written to call out Ulrich as a fraud, sellout and betrayer and refer to Metallica as “parodies” in their latter-day career of “self-sabotage.”

Tensions seemed to have since waned as Mustaine, known for unabashed opining, has had far fewer negative things to say about Metallica than positive, even going as far as to express interest in working together beyond the slew of shows the two bands played with Big Four brethren Slayer and Anthrax.
