8 Rock Bands With Only One Member

3. Nine Inch Nails

If you were looking to start a band at the end of the '80s, you had a few different avenues you could go down. Though it was advised not to go down the hair metal rabbit hole like everyone, other genres bubbling up from the underground like industrial, alternative, and even college rock were managing to find their way onto MTV at the time. You could go a lot of places, and Trent Reznor decided to go for all of them with Nine Inch Nails.

Granted, it's hard to even call Nine Inch Nails a band, per se, considering Reznor is the real mastermind behind everything in the studio. Though given help by some big name producers like Flood and Alan Moulder, a lot of what you hear on albums like Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral are Reznor's vision from front to back, with members being put it to simulate a band feel like on something like March of the Pigs.

What's even more surprising is how effectively Reznor pulls off these soundscapes, going from metal to ballads to even electronic glitchy music that you would find on an album by Depeche Mode. Even as he ventures into movie soundtracks these days, Reznor is still a student of music and is using Nine Inch Nails to make sure he keeps his chops down to a science.
