2. Queens of the Stone Age

As Josh Homme himself puts it, the ending of stoner legends Kyuss ended up being a long time coming. In their efforts to make themselves different from the rest of the pack, the California natives had distilled their sound too much to where there were more rules about what not to play than what you could. Looking to get a fresh start, Queens of the Stone Age became Homme's way of showing his audience every facet of his musical personality.

While still keeping in the realm of stoner rock, albums like Rated R and Songs for the Deaf are fairly eclectic in heir song construction, going from classic rock homages to full on metal moments to soft instrumental passages. You'd swear it was a different band playing on every track...and that's because what basically is. Although Homme has a fairly consistent lineup when taking to the road, stuff as recent as Like Clockwork has had a star studded guest list coming in to provide weird snippets for Homme's warped vision of rock music.

When throwing on a QOTSA, it feels less like an album experience and more like looking in on a jam session between some of the most creative musical minds of the modern age. For as many people have left their stamp on this band, Joshua Homme is the real heart and soul behind QOTSA's stoner rock sultriness.
