8 Rock & Metal Bands That Drastically Switched Genres

2. Linkin Park

Linkin Park are one of the most successful pioneers of Nu Metal. Their first two studio albums were critically acclaimed and landed the Californians a great deal of mainstream success, with songs like One Step Closer and In The End remaining as passionately loved today as they ever were.

But in their later releases, the band started to move away from this particular style of music. With the 2007 release Minutes to Midnight, the tone was switched to a more radio friendly brand of Alternative Rock. The album received mixed reviews, but it did allow Linkin Park to gain exposure from a wider audience, with the song What I’ve Done even going on to feature in the original live action Transformers movie.

By the time their fourth studio album rolled around, the band had taken yet another step away from heavy music, with A Thousand Suns treading new waters in the genre of Electronic Rock. Sales figures for the album were excellent, debuting at the top of the Billboard chart, and the critical reception for the album was considerably greater than that of their third.

The Electronic Rock genre remained a consistent theme from their fifth and sixth studio albums, but for 2017’s upcoming release No More Light, the band looks to have once again taken a change in genre, to a softer and more generic Rock sound, as evidenced by the singles Heavy and Invisible.
