8 Uses Of Auto-Tune That Are Actually OK

7. James Blake - I Mind

Blake's voice, at once fragile and powerful, has become one of the most recognisable in contemporary British music. This isn't just the case within the electronic world; he has contributed vocals to songs for artists like Beyonce and Kanye West. But this hasn't stopped the artist using all manner of editing techniques to chop and screw his vocals into something alien and unrecognisable.

Whilst sometimes these experiments detract from the ghostly beauty of his voice, often they result in something extraordinary. His track "I Mind", from his debut self-titled album, applies liberal amounts of effects on his voice, particularly in the dancehall section at the end of the song. Fragments of melody are looped and auto-tuned into a wordless prayer; this is Blake at his trippy best.
