9 Geeky Musicians You’ve Never Heard Of

As fanatics of all things nerd, we really can't neglect the soundtrack.

Music is an often overlooked element of nerdy fandom. When we consider what our most beloved corners of media are, the style and plot often take precedence over the blood-pumping soundtracks that accompany them.

This is a sad state of affairs, and one that is inherently unfair. So many of our favourite franchises, whether games, film or TV, have been made memorable by their excellent original scores.

As any fan of Halo, Doom, or The Witcher will tell you, nothing makes a great game like a soundtrack to rip and tear to. Likewise fans of Umbrella Academy, Baby Driver and every Quentin Tarantino film under the sun will remind you just how much a soundtrack can do to bring the scenes on screen to life.

Though it may have dropped from the popular mind, there are geeks out there who certainly haven’t forgotten the importance of music. They continue to bless us with stunning covers and reinterpretations of the best tracks from most treasured series.

These are the fellow geeks whose musical talents have made our fandoms a better place to be.

9. Brothers Of Metal

In the annals of geeky music, Viking Metal can be called a spiritual brother. Matched with all the intensity of enjoyment and over-the-top style we expect from our favourite nerd musicians, the only real difference is that these artists draw their inspiration from the sagas of history rather than the annals of Middle Earth.

Brothers of Metal are a fighting, drinking, mead-powered metal band in the style of our favourite Scandinavian raiders of yore. With a score of fast moving tracks based around heavy chords and an excellent female vocal lead, their songs are as memorable as they are head-bangingly enjoyable.

Their music videos are just as engaging too, with that healthy balance between violence and comedy that serves heavy metal so well. Clad in some serious cosplay and pillaging some impressive sets, this band is as entertaining to watch as they are to listen to.

With a bevy of songs about drinking, fighting, dying, and drinking again, Brothers of Metal are the perfect backing track for your less than serious hack-and-slash RPGs.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
