9 Lesser Known Bands That Are Looking To Blow Up In 2020

6. Gulls

I first saw Rhi Kavok performing her poetry at a small festival in the north of England. Even then her raw energy seemed ready to burn down the very stage she stood on. Her voice is one that growls and roars as well as it purrs and coos, inviting you into storytelling and raw emotion that it is impossible not to take note of.

Gulls take Rhi Kavok’s poetry and gives it an even punchier platform. It’s punk in its purest form; vivid and vicious. The sound is gritty and gruesome, brutal and beautiful, swinging the hefty weight necessary to fell the systems and institutions it rallies against. The band creates a lofty soundscape on just guitar and drums, it’s straightforward but creates the electric barb wire bed for the lyrics to writhe about on.

This Brighton based three-piece has been racking up radio play and gigs building their fan base as they’ve soared quickly on the sea winds and Gulls wings to build a reputation for themselves. Having already been invited on BBC Introducing South and with songs like ‘Flaws’ and ‘Shop’ that are unapologetic in their criticism and righteous anger, I’m sure this band is going to make it into many more homes and hearts over the coming year.
