9 Rock Bands Who Hate Their Own Famous Songs
3. Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire
A tragic tale for fans of the band and rock as a whole, the rise and demise of Kings of Leon was a sight to behold. One minute, the band of brothers were the indie sweethearts of America's alternative scene; the next they were possibly the most hated band on the entire planet. But how did it happen?
Before picking up major stardom thanks to the international superhit, 'Sex on Fire', Kings of Leon had built a respectable reputation as plucky upstarts with a trifecta of great albums: 'Youth & Young Manhood' (2003), 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' (2004) and 'Because of the Times' (2007). But their fourth album, 'Only By the Night', marked an abrupt and immediate shift towards a mainstream market, spearheaded by one of the 21st century's biggest rock hits.
Despite the success 'Sex on Fire' brought the band, vocalist Caleb Followill has constantly expressed his disdain towards the megahit. He stated that the band didn't even want to include the song on the album because they hated it so much. Drummer Nathan Followill also admitted in a 2014 interview with The Sun that he was "sick and tired" of playing it, adding:
I would be pretty damn happy if my sex was never ever on fire again.
The subsequent tour was a disaster for the band, with the members constantly fighting and walking off stage during shows. Although they enjoyed the fame it brought, Kings of Leon have never truly recovered from 'Sex on Fire'.
