All Gorillaz Albums Ranked From Worst To Best
4. Gorillaz (The Self-Titled Album)
Gorillaz's self-titled album, released in 2001, was the band's debut and, though it was expected to do fairly well given Damon Albarn's established career as the vocalist of Blur, no one expected the cultural impact that this album would end up having.
The project began with co-creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett talking to each other about the lack of substance and originality in the music industry. They decided to team up and combine their skills as a musician and an artist to create the cartoon band Gorillaz. Their debut album was an incredible introduction to the band's characters and synth-pop style and became an international sensation, earning them an entry in the Guinness Book Of World Records for the "Most Successful Virtual Band."
The album is held back by it's slightly harsh and dated production quality, but songs like 19-2000 and Tomorrow Comes Today embrace the glitchy nature of some electronic music production to create the band's original style that we still see today on new songs like Pac-Man.
By far, the highest point of this album is the classic song Clint Eastwood. Not only is it one of the band's catchiest and best-selling songs, if you listen closely, it also gives some insight into the character of Russel who became possessed by the souls of his dead friends.
