Another 6 Things You Should Be Listening To Right Now

4. Flying Lotus

electronica/hip hop/jazz

Though born Steven Ellison, he tends to mostly go by Flying Lotus, or FlyLo. An altogether cooler name I think you€™ll agree, not that there€™s anything wrong with Steven Ellison of course. It just doesn€™t have the impact that Flying Lotus does, and impact is something that FlyLo has in spades when it comes to his music.

A one man but multi-genre operation, Ellison has been crafting himself as quite the experimental producer since his debut 1983 was released back in 2006. Since then he€™s built up a veritable back catalogue of EPs, LPs, collaborations and production jobs, including recent work on Hodgy Beats€™ Untitled EP. His style tends to work around very dense sound textures built up of samples, sequences, synths, beats and a very relaxed attitude to genre definition.

At any one moment FlyLo can bring to mind instrumental hip hop, funk, electronica, jazz, funk and collage music. A primarily instrumental artist he has as previously mentioned leant his production techniques to rappers and vocalists alike, including a collaboration with Radiohead€™s Thom Yorke on 2010€™s Cosmogramma. With a family connection to John Coltrane there€™s jazz and composition in his heritage, having even performed live improvised scores to avant-garde films. With a new album due to drop later this year, keep your ears to the ground for it.
