Arctic Monkeys: 10 Underrated B-Sides (That Deserved To Be Album Tracks)

1. Anyways (Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, 2018)

Let's get this straight right off the bat: Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was a weird record, even by Arctic Monkeys standards.

One of the main (we think unfair) criticisms levelled toward TBH&C was that many of its songs seemed to blend into one and lack distinctive choruses.

While it's true that the laid-back lounge ballad that is Anyways probably wouldn't have won over many of the record's detractors, it would have been a perfect interlude in the album's somewhat crowded middle section.

Anyways, which was included on the single release of the title track but not the album itself, is a more personal and introspective lens into the lives of the guests at the Hotel & Casino, straying away from the overtly political nature of much the album's material. "You can call me Alexander / It's nice to meet you" might be a simple and, on the surface, bland line, but in a record populated with so many (mostly anonymous) characters, it's a welcome reprieve from the chaos of the Casino which perfectly encapsulates Tranquility Base's themes of technology tearing humanity apart, rather than bringing us together.

And let's admit it, an Arctic Monkeys album can never suffer from too much Alex Turner crooning.
