12. Beatles For Sale (1964)
Best Song: Eight Days A Week Worst Song: Mr Moonlight The album released after the Beatles broke America and Beatlemania was at its peak. Beatles for Sale is the album where time was hard to come by due the tour demand, promotional demands in Australia and Asia and the lack of time alone to write. As a result Beatles for Sale was written under pressure and featured a range of covers to fill the album. Considered by critics as a low moment for a band who wrote an all original track list for A Hard Day's Night just months earlier. Lennon's change of mood was evident in the opening three tracks "No Reply", "I'm a Loser" and "Baby's in Black" where he expressed a sadder side to his songwriting style and emotional state. McCartney's song writing is strongest on the album; with his catchy pop infused "I'll Follow the Sun" giving some life to the otherwise drainer of an album, followed by the chirpy love song "Every Little Thing", and the folky "What You're Doing".
