11. Please Please Me (1963)
Best Song: Twist and Shout Worst Song: Misery The debut release and the start of all the madness for the four lads from Liverpool. The band was assigned a week to write some songs for their first recording session with producer George Martin at Abbey Road Studios. The recording of Please Please Me took place over one day of recording everything vocals, harmonies and instruments. Such a great effort of an album for first timers, and to be recorded in one day was a sign of pure talent. Opening with a count of "one, two, three, four!" is I Saw Her Standing There, is McCartney's boppy rock number. The harmonica driven debut single for the boys Love Me Do is among track list stand outs. But taking the spot for best vocal performance is John Lennon's cover of the Bert/Russell classic Twist and Shout - recorded as the last song of the recording session when Lennon's throat was swollen and sore gave the raspy tone to his vocals famously heard on the track. The Beatles cover of Twist and Shout went down in history as one of the greatest vocal performances by Lennon. To this current day most aren't aware that the band covered it because they made that song there's with that recording.
