13. I Saw Her Standing There
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsgWfAilIEM Writer: Lennon-McCartney Album: 'Please Please Me' 'One, two, three, FOUR!' cries McCartney at the start of one of The Beatles' earliest hits. The song speaks of obsession with a girl at a dance, only wanting to be with her. The song is ripe with youthful passion and enthusiasm, clearly echoing the group at the time of it's release. 'I Saw Her Standing There Is Full' of Rock and Roll rhythms, a step away from what the group had been doing as The Quarrymen. There are echoes of skiffle group in the depths of this song. 12. Julia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQtAQHrCLVc Writer: Lennon-McCartney (Lennon) Album: 'The Beatles' (The White Album) Written in memory of his mother, Lennon gives one of his finest vocal performances. 'When I cannot sing my heart/ I can only speak my mind', croons Lennon over simplistic and double tracked acoustic guitar. Lennon also makes reference to his future wife, Yoko Ono in the line 'Oceanchild, calls me'. 'Julia' becomes all the more touching when we think of how suddenly Lennon's mother was taken; one of the most touching Beatles songs. 11. Help!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNahS3OHPwA Writer: Lennon-McCartney Album: 'Help!' 'Help, I need somebody/ Help, not just anybody' cries John Lennon on the opening track of the soundtrack album, also called 'Help!'. Over a folky 12-string guitar rhythm and Harrison and McCartney's classic backing vocals, Lennon sings of growing up, and finding that someone to help him. Named 'in desperation', 'Help!' was part of a string of American number ones for the group, and in 1985 became the first Beatles song to be licesed for advertising. It's popularity is well deserved, 'Help!' being one of the greatest Beatles songs.
