Beck: Ranking His Albums From Worst To Best
4. Mellow Gold
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgSPaXgAdzEOne of the most daring releases of the 90's, Mellow Gold was the worlds first official introduction to Beck after his first two independent offbeat, folk albums Golden Feelings and Stereopathetic Soulmanure. Beck says that first single 'Loser' was a mistake in response to the songs success and that same anti-commercial ethos is felt throughout the long player as well.
'Loser' is also Beck at his most free-flowing lyrically, transforming the song into a brilliantly nonsensical visual display raging from 'In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey' to Forces of evil in a bozo nightmare'. Mellow Gold is also a great example of his unique ability to pull seemingly isolated musical styles together into one cohesive whole, best exemplified on the melting pot, acid folk-rock amalgamation 'F**kin With My Head (Mountain Dew Rock)'.
Perhaps the greatest achievements manifest themselves towards the latter half though especially on the scintillating production tricks in 'Beercan' or the psychedelic probes of 'Steal My Body Home'.
A debut album that laid the groundwork for a path previously untraveled in music, one that exhibits all the madcap experimentation of a musical visionary.
