Beck: Ranking His Albums From Worst To Best
2. Sea Change
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkNa5xzOe5UIt is amazing to think that before Sea Change, Beck hadn't really ventured into more introspective and emotional themes but he makes up for that on the heart-wrenching, melancholic 2002 record.
It certainly was a genuine change of sorts for Beck personally, with the album being spawned in response to his divorce at the time which is something that envelops much of Sea Change. That sense of loss is felt throughout it particularly on the gloom ridden 'Lonesome Tears' or the sorrow-filled 'Already Dead'.
Last years Morning Phase was a return to the more stripped back explorations of Sea Change but it wasn't quite as captivating as this emotionally raw album. Becks voice really gets the plaudits here particularly on the cold, confessional cut 'Guess I'm Doing Fine' and the depressingly stark 'It's All In Your Mind', showing that Beck had the ability to put his voice out in the forefront for the first time.
While the album is stripped back it still somehow sounds expansive with Beck allowing the album to open up and allowing the songs to go wherever they decide to go, helping to further expand the record's floaty, weightlessness. The album features many highlights such as the incredibly dramatic string section in 'Paper Tiger' and the triumphant rallying cries of 'Sunday Sun', all adding up to make it one of the most thoughtful and painfully cathartic albums of the 21st century.
