The What Culture Interview: Jon Gomm - 22/11/2013

On Re-Working Old Material For The New Album

Jon Gomm 3S.T: Back to the new album, you€™ve included the singles from the last few years; Passionflower, Ain€™t Nobody and Message in a Bottle, was that to breathe knew life into them through re-recording, or to put them on-album for a bigger audience? J.G: Yeah they€™re completely new recordings, they sound really different, the tempos are different and the mixing as well, I had a Producer on this album, so basically I said to him, €œJust take them somewhere different if you want to, with the effects to take them just somewhere a little bit different€ Of course then you were caught between wanting to do something new, and be creative with that, but not wanting to p*ss off the people who liked those tunes! (laughs), they might listen to the album and go €œUrgh it€™s awful!€ y€™no? Something like Ain€™t Nobody, it€™s a fairly simple tune, but there€™s a middle section where he€™s gone really nuts and put in a lot of flange on the echo on it, and it just sounds really nuts, but its really cool! (laughs) Every time I hear it, it just makes me smile! Also because he€™s mixed it, Message in a Bottle is a really complicated tune, there€™s a lot going on within the tune, it€™s so fiddly and intricate, but he€™s brought out and it sounds how it was always supposed to sound, but I could never get it right on tape, so I€™m really pleased with that!
