Download Festival 2014 Review: 10 Best Performances

5. Volbeat

Classic rock is alive and kicking, as Denmark€™s premium rock band Volbeat continue to prove: having had a major year in 2013, which was buoyed further by legendary former Anthrax member, Rob Caggiano joining, the bad proved that 2014 is still just as big. Blending rockabilly, country and melodic, emotional rock, Volbeat play with their Johnny Cash and Elvis loving hearts on their sleeves, and the addition of Caggiano has added a far heavier edge that is stunningly engaging. They have evolved considerably in the past couple of years, and what resulted at Download was a beautifully honed, hugely ranged rock experience taking in a multitude of influences - including a traditional nod to Cash - pushed through a front-man in Michael Poulsen who is both massively charismatic and brilliantly hard-hitting. The band€™s chemistry is infectious, and if they continue to impress as they currently are, it can€™t be long before they push their way further up the bill in coming years.
