Every Billy Joel Album Ranked Worst To Best
9. The Nylon Curtain
Wanting to create an album with more melodic tones and refined lyricism, Joel spent more time than ever focused on making his vision come true with his eight record. By Joel's own standards, he succeeded on all counts, as he considers The Nylon Curtain to be his best work, and the record he is most proud of.
Many see the record as a passion project, as well as a tribute to The Beatles and the recently lost John Lennon. The lyrics are sombre but hopeful, and the fusion of jazz and pop still holds up today. Each song features a new tone and a new theme, showcasing Joel's ability to move so easily between genres and mix-up the songwriting formula.
The record opens with the brilliant "Allentown" and features the epic "Goodnight Saigon," an ode to the soldiers who fought during the Vietnam War. The second half of the album may not be as strong as the ambitious first, but all in all The Nylon Curtain is a great slice of music joy.
