Every Bob Dylan Album Ranked Worst To Best

20. Tempest (2012)

Tempest is an exceptionally dark album, following an older, wiser Dylan as he tackles recurring themes of love, death and humanism with added pathos, cynicism and wry humour.

For ten wonderful tracks, Dylan takes centre stage and tells a series of stories with startling symbolism (Duquesne Whistle), violent imagery (Pay In Blood), and striking sentimentality (Roll On John, an affecting tribute to John Lennon).

It's easily Dylan's most lyrically troubling album, and can be a hard one to listen to on repeat, but its emotional power is what makes it such a great record, and a high point in his late-career era.
