Every Childish Gambino Single Ranked Worst To Best
14. Time (feat. Ariana Grande)
Another song from Gambino’s most recent release (3.15.20),
Time is a valiant effort (especially comparatively to the entry that
came prior). With an interesting but incidentally subjugation of integration in
regards to Ariana Grande’s underwhelmingly drowned out vocals, in an effort
that sounds more like it was returning the favour (to Gambino appearing
on Ariana Grande’s “Break Your Heart Right Back”) as it is painfully imminent that
she only lends her vocals, rather than applying them, coming across like a
momentary afterthought to give the song a little bit more life.
However, though the instrumental maintains an almost digitised African tribal theme which immediately shows a sign of innovation and originality, but the lyrics are the main selling point of this song, from the get go we understand that while Gambino is talking about Earth and the people that populate it, we're completely blindsided by an overwhelming attack on the senses as the listener tries to decrypt the hidden meaning to all of this.
“Seven billion people Tryna free themselves Said a billion prayers Tryna save myself I can see it coming But it's moving fast”
Even on repeat listening’s, I’m still really unsure as to what this all means.
