Every Queen Album Opening Song Ranked From Worst To Best

14. Mustapha - Jazz

Mustapha from 1978's Jazz begins with Mercury bellowing out "Ibrahim" in an homage to Muslim prayer, before turning into an upbeat rocker with a series of non-English vocals from the frontman.

It's largely performed in Arabic, with a few nods to Mercury's own Farsi heritage too. Naturally, it's fascinating to listen to a band as popular as Queen were in the late '70s experiment like this and put such a marginalised culture right at the forefront of their work.

Unfortunately, the song doesn't quite work.

It's a bit too random for its own good, not really going anywhere or doing anything. It may have worked as a middle track somewhere on the album, but, as the opener, it's way too exposed.

Considering this is the album with Don't Stop Me Now on it, they made the wrong choice.
