Nominees: Piece by Piece- Kelly Clarkson; How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful - Florence + The Machine; Before This World - James Taylor; Uptown Special - Mark Ronson; 1989 - Taylor SwiftWho Should Win: 1989 - Taylor Swift Swifty's fifth album, 1989 was huge. When I say huge, I mean ginormous. Its debut week sales in the US were the highest since 2002 - although Adele has obviously trounced that more recently. It demolished records and had a string of wildly successful hits like Shake It Off and Blank Space. With this album, Taylor had cut off, no massacred any country ties that inspired her as a young teenage starlet. Swift had gone full-blown pop! For most, it was an exciting and positive revelation. Her lyrics were cheeky, fun, yet at times emotional. This was a slicker than slick pop album that had some truly mesmerising pop productions. Taylor's pop domination with 1989 wasn't short lived, no, 1989 was a massive success consistently through 2014 and 2015. All of the other nominees managed to score a successful lead single (bar James Taylor), but their popularity and sales would quickly diminish as their album eras continued. Taylor, on the other hand, continued to obtain hit after hit, proving she had created a sugary sweet recipe for success. Every single track on 1989 was a major ingredient into how Swifty produced the Pop Album of the Year.
