Well, no. The Song award recognises the actual composer of the song, rather than the performer or production team. Ed Sheeran wrote and performed this enchanting ballad and in return, it gave Ed one of the biggest songs of his career so far. It became his second number one in the UK and his highest peaking single in the US. On top of that, it also became the first single to ever spend a full year in the UK top 40! A huge achievement! Blank Space and Girl Crush should definitely not win this award as these songs are completely interchangeable with any pop or country song from the last twenty years. Just because the writers can incorporate complex lyrics, it doesn't mean that the song will emanate real substance and soul. Alright and See You Again should definitely be in with a shot of winning. Lamar's track was a social commentary on the struggle of Africans and See You Again was obviously written as an emotional tribute to Paul Walker. Both are worthy of the win, but Sheeran's clever lyrics and huge sentimental value of each word really connected to many people around the world and the song became the soundtrack to love and happiness. Now etched in wedding music playlists for eternity, Sheeran has cleverly constructed a timeless song that many people are already deeming to be a classic. Although that may be a rather large dollop of hyperbole, the song has definitely cemented his position as one of the best song writers and performers of today.
