4. American Gangster (2007)

With no new material to inspire him, Jay-Z wasn€™t planning on an album release in 2007. It wasn€™t until he saw an early cut of the feature film, American Gangster, which made him want to make a new record. Jay went to Sean €œP. Diddy€ Combs and asked him for help. Diddy made him listen to unreleased beats that were going to be used by The Notorious B.I.G. Each song on the record tells a separate story based on the lives of Frank Lucas and his own. American Gangster feels both nostalgic and fresh. The sound has a very seventies feel yet the lyrics are very modern. In this album, Jay-Z revisits his past, while contemplating the present.
