Katy Perry: 10 Things We've Learnt From The Queen Of Pop

9. Use Your Voice

Using your voice is the central theme of Katy Perry€™s 2013 hit single Roar. The song is a phenomenal anthem with inspirational lyrics that teach us to stand up for ourselves and for what we believe in. Roar's lyrics document Perry€™s epiphany to the fact that she is €˜a champion€™ and proclaim that she will no longer bite her tongue but instead use her voice to €˜roar€™. Perry sings of the pain that not using your voice can cause in her song The One That Got Away. The song is about the regret that Perry feels for letting a past lover slip away and includes the lyrics €˜I should have told you what you meant to me, cos now I pay the price€™. This showcases how not using her voice led to the loss of her lover and to immense heartbreak. Perry believes that everyone should have the right to use their voice and be able to €˜roar€™ and she recently joined fellow pop queen Madonna on her €˜Art For Freedom€™ movement, which uses art to promote freedom of speech around the world.
