It was back in 1994 that Stipe decided talk about his sexuality publicly, after being pretty vocal about the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980's as rumours about his sexuality began to circulate. When looking back at his coming out ,twenty-six years ago, the way he spoke about sexuality was very modern.

In a statement sounding like something pulled straight from Twitter and not a two decades old interview Stipe spoke about how he doesn't identify as gay, straight or bisexual but simply as queer. He explained that "I think there's a line drawn between gay and queer, and for me, queer describes something that's more inclusive of the grey areas."

Speaking about how sexuality is a spectrum and how some people don't strongly identify as gay or straight. He also linked sexuality to identity saying "The identity that I'm most comfortable with is queer."

In recent years, Stipe has spoken about his coming out a few times and about how the worlds view on LGBTQ+ topics have changed. He's spoke about being proud of who he is, happy that he spoke publicly about his sexuality and thrilled that LGBTQ+ topics have become much more open and frequent discussions.
