Marilyn Manson: EVERY Album Ranked Worst To Best

7. The Golden Age Of Grotesque

The fifth album of Marilyn Manson's career came at something of a crossroads. The first four records were all incredibly well accomplished, solidifying Manson as a band not willing to conform to the mainstream sounds of the time. But by the time The Golden Age of Grotesque came about, it looked as though Manson was running on fumes, unable to keep up the so-far solid run.

The Golden Age of Grotesque is polished, refined, almost pop-y at times, and received a lot more radio play than the band's previous records. With songs such as "Mobscene" and the awful "Doll-Dagga-Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag," it seemed as though Manson was just messing around, almost parodying himself.

That being said, with nearly twenty songs, there are some true classics amongst the coal, including the moody, piano-infused title track, the angry "This is the New Sh*t" and the violent anthem "Use Your Fist and Not Your Mouth." There's a lot to love with the individual songs, and Manson deserves credit for trying new things, but as a whole the album is not up to scratch.
