Marvel Cinematic Universe: Soundtrack Scores Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Black Panther

When Black Panther was released in cinemas in early 2019, it was assumed by many that it was a stepping stone film, simply giving the character a little more backstory on the way to Avengers: Infinity War.

What audiences weren't expecting was a masterclass in how to create a superb film, with tremendous acting on all fronts and one of the best and most evocative scores of the decade.

It was also one of two soundtracks released for the film. Kendrick Lamar also curated and released Black Panther: The Album, which consisted of songs based on ideas raised by the film.

Both soundtrack and score received critical acclaim. Goransson received the Oscar for Best Original Score. He worked with Senegalese singer Baaba Maal, travelling throughout Africa to create the different tribal sounds that would add up to the whole. The score combines traditional African instruments and vocals with the symphony orchestra that would be used in most of the Marvel films. A choir sang in the Xhosa language.

Goransson noted that he felt like an odd choice to score the film, as he is Swedish. He started working with director Ryan Coogler as early as possible, apparently far earlier than most other composers in the MCU. He was tasked with creating music that would have had no influence from traditional Christian styles, as Wakanda had never been colonised in continuity.

The resulting score stands as the crown jewel in the MCU's musical catalogue. With many stand out moments to choose from, it is impossible to select the 'best' theme - it is an album that should be enjoyed as a whole from start to finish.
