Marvel Cinematic Universe: Soundtrack Scores Ranked From Worst To Best
20. Avengers: Age Of Ultron
This sequel to the massive Avenger Assemble was a joint project between Brian Tyler and Danny Elfman. Tyler was initially brought on board, returning after his efforts on Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, creating a new sense of continuity by referencing the themes from earlier entries.
Elfman then worked on a new hybrid theme, using Silvestri's Avengers fanfare, while also creating a consistency with Tyler's work.
There is a problem with the Avenger films that is most evident in this outing. There is so much going on on screen that it is very easy for different character themes to get lost in the din. Silvestri managed to make his Captain America theme rise above the cacophony in Avengers Assemble and eeked out a new theme for Black Widow.
Yet, Iron Man and Thor were left a little short changed. In this outing, all of the Avengers feel a bit mashed together musically speaking. The score, while entertaining, is a bit monotonous. The two styles of composers do work well together, though neither rise above whats happening in the moment.
There are a couple of moments that are memorable. Hulk's lullaby in Breaking and Entering is one, while Elfman's new theme is enjoyable. The score however is something of a frustrating mix of themes that simply should have been either better, or utilised in another way to highlight their strengths.
The resulting work is unfortunately the weakest of the Avengers soundtracks.
