Marvel Cinematic Universe: Soundtrack Scores Ranked From Worst To Best

21. Iron Man

Long before he was composing the beautifully dark backdrop of Westeros, Ramin Djawadi created the first score in what would become known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was a relatively new composer at the time and he sought out the role himself, being a fan of the comics since childhood.

As per John Favreau's request, the score combines electric guitar and orchestra. It was written in something of a rush, as the film was already completed by the time Djawadi came on board. As such, some cues were delegated to Hans Zimmer and Remote Control productions. This would unfortunately lead to some controversy over the score.

Remote Control productions includes a large amount of composers working with Hans Zimmer that have had a hand in many, many films over the last twenty years. Numerous members of the International Film Music Critics Association have credited the company with lowering the quality of film music.

They claim that Zimmer has created something of a monopoly over film music through this company, with 2008's Iron Man score being swept up in this. Criticism was directed toward Djawadi and in particular his use of electric guitar. One critic claimed that he did not have the depth to bring anything new to the genre.

While Djawadi would go on from here to create some of the most memorable and stunning television scores of all time in his Game of Thrones soundtracks, this was something of a rocky start for the young composer.
