Marvel Cinematic Universe: Soundtrack Scores Ranked From Worst To Best
15. Thor: The Dark World
Brian Tyler returned to the MCU for his take on Thor with this outing and it is, by and large, a great addition to the series. It would also give us the fanfare that has appeared before most of the MCU films that followed.
The film's main theme is a huge and driving theme that appears many times throughout the action scenes, suitably stirring and epic in scope. Tyler was actually the second choice to compose the for film, replacing Carter Burwell who had originally signed on, though left for the time-honoured reason: creative differences.
The theme itself is simple but it suits the film. It is easily recognizable which is, arguably, the sign of a good theme tune. Howard Shore used that very method to compose his themes for Middle-Earth, of which there is something of an homage in this film. Tyler does not go to the depths that Shore would, keeping things somewhat lighter and in the realm of fun.
The Dark World has a somewhat reviled place among MCU fans as being something of a filler movie. While it is better than its reputation, it is undeniably one of the more mediocre entries. The score steps above this, not really daring to do much in the way innovation (unlike Ragnarok), but perfectly servicing the film as it was.
The theme may return many, many times in the film's runtime - but it does not outstay its welcome, nor does it feel intrusive.
