Marvel Cinematic Universe: Soundtrack Scores Ranked From Worst To Best
14. Captain America: Civil War
Henry Jackman returned to the MCU for the third Captain America film. It seems as though the critics were heard loud and clear after the reaction to his score for The Winter Soldier, however this score is still nothing like the thematic Silvestri entries.
That in itself is not necessarily the worst. Civil War is a big step up from The Winter Soldier. For one, there is more variety of tone. There are plenty of big, bombastic moments. Perhaps the scores best entry is Civil War itself, scoring the airport fight. There are plenty of moments of bluster but they don't drown each other out.
Things cool down in both Consequences and Closure, showing Jackman has the ability to inject range in this action score. While the soundtrack did not match the highs of many of the other entries in the franchise, it has its own voice - something that was somewhat lacking from The Winter Soldier.
It offers a new theme for Black Panther and for Spiderman, though neither would be revisited in the respective solo outings. There are few, if any, callbacks to earlier themes here. Before the release of the film, Jackman said that the score would be taking its lead from the more industrial sounds of The Winter Soldier, though in hindsight this may have been something of a misdirect.
While not as strong as Silvestri's The First Avenger score, this effort is a success for Jackman, delivering a solid soundtrack to what is effectively Avengers 2.5.
