Randall Blythe As a one-two opening barrage of riff-powered fury, Let Darkness Fall aims to keep up the pace following Randy Blythe's blood vessel-bursting opener, but the real surprise comes just when you think you've got the song figured out as a 'Mastodon goes old-school' vibe, only for it to dive into a flamenco/acoustic territory. Although it's not being treated this way, you can look at Metal Allegiance in a similar way to how Slash approached his 2010 solo album, a revolving door of vocalists with him at the centre, except this time with Alex Skolnick. Skolnick is definitely playing to everyone's strengths including his own, but it must be mentioned just how outstanding and diverse his playing is across the board. From nailing runs so fast they feel like they're just ahead of the beat on Can't Kill The Devil, to this track's gear-switch into a completely unexpected section or the intro solo on Wait Until Tomorrow, you just don't realise how gifted he is until it's put right in front of you.
