Metallica: 10 Best Songs AFTER St. Anger

2. Hardwired

If you wanted the Metallica of old on full display then this is it. Hardwired is the opening track from 2016's Hardwired... to Self-Destruct and it is three minutes of full on thrash mastery.

It has been a long time since Metallica sounded so angry and energised. Every constituent part of Hardwired is honed perfectly. The guitars are fast and messy, and the drums are a cut above what we've been used to hearing from Lars Ulrich. The bass is tight and creates a frenetic backbone of the song and with the vocals we hear a furious Hetfield. The song deals with humanity's propensity to keep f*****g things up and the state of the world we live in as a result.

For the remainder of Metallica's career its not a bold claim to expect to see this on most of their setlists. The perfect opener or first song of the encore, Hardwired will get a live audience headbanging and moving without fail.
