Metallica: 10 Best Songs You Haven't Heard

9. Hell And Back

In 2008, Metallica announced their return to their thrash metal roots in their ninth studio album Death Magnetic. While still polarising to the hardcore fans, the return of fast-paced, more complex songs is seen as an overall refreshing point in the band's career.

Three years after the album's release, Metallica released the four-track EP Beyond Magnetic, which was advertised as a collection of b-sides from the Death Magnetic recordings.

Still retaining the intensity but now featuring a much-improved production job (not echoing the 'sound wars' compression as seen in the album), the EP was seen as more than ample material that would've fit perfectly in its parent release.

The pick of the litter from the EP would have to be "Hell and Back". Sitting somewhere between the songwriting chops of "The Day That Never Comes" and "The Unforgiven III" with its walking riffs, gloomy dirges from Kirk and Rob, and exciting bursts in the chorus, the shortest song on the release adds a doom flair to the modern Metallica sound.

The song proved to be a bit of a relief for fans, helping to scrub the aural memory of Lulu out of people's minds, having been released two months prior.
