Metallica: 10 Best Songs You Haven't Heard
8. For Whom The Bell Tolls (The Irony Of It All) / For Whom The Bell Tolls (Haven't Heard It Yet Mix)
Sticking in the world of films now whilst also considering the argument of "when does a Metallica song stop being a Metallica song?"
The 90s were a considerably edgy time for youths. Music seemed to split between two sides of dark, heavy grunge and technicoloured heavy rave, and violence, blood and all things gnarly dominated film and TV, so it made sense to put all these things together in a melting pot and see what came out on the other side.
Enter Spawn, the 1997 superhero film that acted as a gory and gritty alternative to the more mainstream and campier Batman & Robin film released the same year. As part of the film, its accompanying soundtrack featured some big names in rock and metal being remixed by some of techno and breakbeat's rising stars.
Metallica collaborated with trip hop newcomer DJ Spooky in a remix for longtime fan favourite "For Whom the Bell Tolls". The track features the iconic bass opening of the late Cliff Burton backed by a fast-paced electronic drum beat, transitions making full use of the original's opening bell, and James' vocals heavily reverbed and altered.
A Marmite track maybe, but a hearty slice of the 90s nonetheless.
