Metallica: ONE Overlooked Song On Every Album
1. Am I Savage - Hardwired...to Self Destruct
Once Metallica got back to basics on Death Magnetic, fans were starting to get a little bit antsy awaiting the next album. While the wait for Hardwired...to Self Destruct wasn't necessarily as long as something like Guns N Roses' Chinese Democracy, it always felt long seeing thrash's greatest band continue to tour while their contemporaries like Megadeth and Anthrax were still putting out records. When we finally got an album in front of us though, they sure delivered one hell of a package.
Being the only double album that the band have ever released, there was always going to be songs that were considered throwaways, with songs like Here Comes Revenge getting forgotten in favor of stuff like Moth Into Flame. And while the fans were coming down hard on Am I Savage at the start, time has been pretty kind to this song, having a much different vibe than any other Metallica song that has come before it.
Aside from the amazing groovy riff that leads most of the song, the standout part of the track has got to be that breakdown riff, with the harmonics on the guitar sounding like machines shutting down as the track goes along. Metallica may have had over 30 years under their belt when they made this, but it's songs like these that give the hardened metalheads hope for the future. If they have enough gas left in the tank for something like this, they are capable of pretty much anything else.
