Metallica: ONE Overlooked Song On Every Album
5. Cure - Load
Oh...you thought that Metallica were thinking about cashing in on the Black Album? Boy, you weren't even slightly prepared for what Load was going to bring. Having a sound more in tune with the '90s alternative scene, this is where the band completely changed their image to something a lot more radio friendly than before. As much as some fans might wince at something like Until it Sleeps though, there are still loads of good ideas on this record.
In between the more commercial stuff, there are songs like Cure that have a slightly more sinister edge than the likes of Hero of the Day. With Hetfield getting his signature growl on during this verses, the actual song benefits a lot from the low end, as Jason Newsted employs slap bass for the only time on a Metallica release.
There are the makings of something that could be great on this song...it's just a shame that the band never saw anything in it either. When going across the globe again on the Load tour, this song has still never met the stage and was probably quickly forgotten by the time the band got together to work on the follow up just a few years later. Nevertheless, this is the kind of song that Metallica needs to make from time to time. It's not to the level of, say, Battery or anything, but it's just proof that the band aren't afraid to take a chance and just see what happens with it.
