Metallica: ONE Overlooked Song On Every Album

3. The Unnamed Feeling - St. Anger

Look...I'm not going to come up on this Internet here and tell you that St. Anger is secretly the greatest thing that Metallica has ever made. Hell, if you've seen any of the documentary Some Kind of Monster, you know that even making this record was a living hell at points, especially when listening to the drums batter into your head on EVERY SINGLE TRACK. In the midst of the heavier side of Metallica though, we had a dark ballad towards the end.

Being led by more clean guitars and slow plodding riffs, the Unnamed Feeling is actually a welcome change of pace from the wall of noise that was present on a lot of the other songs on the record. That's not to say that all the bad habits are gone. Yes, the drums still sound like they are being played on a trash can and James Hetfield is really letting his voice take him to some weird places.

In a strange way though, this is one of the few times where that sound actually compliments the song. When you're talking about this feeling of panic and anger that sweeps over you, it would make sense that the rest of the song would sound a bit on edge as well, almost like the song is about to explode or fall apart at any given moment. Since this was intended to be a more emotional album that anything Metallica had done, this is probably the closest that the band came to making that style work effectively.
