Muse: 10 Essential Tracks ALL Fans Should Listen To
5. New Born
One of Matt Bellamy's most constant themes across his songwriting career is the fear of technology getting the better of humanity, how it could become completely uncontrollable. In New Born, that theme carries through with the notion of a very different world, almost Matrix like, as humanity uploads itself into a completely different reality.
It also helps that it's a well crafted song, starting with an almost haunting piano solo that slowly builds itself up into an all out rock fest towards its tail. Bellamy's voice is at its peak here, through the soft intro and lifting into a high falsetto almost effortlessly. It's another prime example of his impressive range, one clearly inspired by the late Jeff Buckley.
It's also worth listening to New Born live, as the band have constantly iterated and updated the song over the years to suit their style and added a few flourishes to the performance in the process. You might also hear a few references to some other influential artists, including Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and the track 'Microphone Fiend'.
