Muse: 10 Essential Tracks ALL Fans Should Listen To

6. Time Is Running Out

Time is Running Out is one of the most important singles of Muse's entire career. For one, it marked the first song to break into the UK Top 10 when it released in 2003, and it marked their first hit in the US market a year later. Secondly and more importantly, it's still one of the most played and loved songs across their catalogue.

Again, it's a track that marked that early sense of evolution for the band's sound following their first two albums yet, a fresh beat that still sounds familiar and in keeping with what fans knew. It's an incredibly catchy tune, paced by the constant clicking of fingers and another clean bass line.

Lyrically, Time is Running out is an obvious reference to the end, whether that's in death, relationships or something important. The music video specifically calls out the end of life itself, through the use of a war table and the potential insanity that comes with it.

There's also a tiny homage to the classic movie Dr. Strangelove, and the song itself was inspired in part by Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.
