Nick Cave: 10 Dark Masterpieces

6. Oh My Lord

http://youtu.be/uny3pYb1fsI Being released in the wake of the stately Boatman's Call, No More Shall We Part is considered by some to be one of the mellower Nick Cave albums. And, yes, with strangely sweet songs like God Is In The House, it certainly has moments that you wouldn't hesitate to share with your grandmother. However, at times the intensity levels are set dangerously high. Oh My Lord is theatrical €“ almost operatic €“ in its feel; detailing in horrifying detail the ramblings of a slowly unravelling mind. Cave's vocals become increasingly unhinged and desperate before the almost unbearable tension gives way to an epic squalling violin solo from Warren Ellis. Yet amidst all of this, there's still room for a soaring chorus that feels as though it's being streamed straight from Broadway €“ and, of course, Cave's trademark humour is never very far, either. It's easy to forget that, even at its darkest, the music of Nick Cave is always tuneful and, more often than not, really quite funny.
