Nick Cave: 10 Dark Masterpieces

5. Hiding All Away

http://youtu.be/_IFYS2wcX8Y Anybody who might be wondering where to start with Nick Cave's seemingly impenetrable back catalogue should look no further than 2004's epic double, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. The first disc features some of the most uplifting and accessible music he's ever written; whilst the second disc allows him to show off his softer side. But nestling hidden within this masterful collection like a malignant tumour you'll still find such staggeringly dark, intense and mystifying music as really couldn't have sprung from any other mind. Hiding All Away is a slow-burning horrorshow amidst the uncharacteristically bright first disc. It tells the story of a young woman and her encounters with a grotesque cast of ne'erdowells, and it just radiates evil. But Cave's merciful enough to occasionally provide release from the suffocating atmosphere. The conclusion is absolutely stunning and should be played at nothing less than the highest volume possible.
